“This material is developed from the idea that a solar textile, unlike the large and rigid solar panels on roofs and in the fields, could offer a much more physical and tactile way for people to interact with and relate to the sun and its energy. Also the flexibility and pliability of textiles promises a variety of applications including textile architecture, tents, canopies and curtains.”
After making a few solar samples Isabela Verhagen was asked to design an outfit for Desmond Tutu as he could be an ambassador for the Zonnestof project. One of the designs is fabricated on a 1/2 scale. All the yarns are hand dyed with avocado kerns, beetroots and union skins.
